When Kenneth Cole tweeted, Millions are in uproar in Cairo. Rumor has they heard our new spring collection is now available online at Kenneth Cole s website. 96 This reference to the 2011 Egyptian revolution drew an objection from the public; it was widely objected to on the Internet. 96 Kenneth Cole realized his mistake shortly after and responded with a statement apologizing for the tweet.
In 2012 during Hurricane Sandy, Gap sent out a tweet to its followers telling them to stay safe but encouraged them to shop online and offered free shipping. The tweet was deemed insensitive, and Gap eventually took it down and apologized. 98 Numerous additional online marketing mishap examples exist. Examples include a YouTube video of a Domino s Pizza employee violating health code standards, which went viral on the Internet and later resulted in felony charges against two employees.
95 99 A Twitter hashtag posted by McDonald s in 2012 attracting attention due to numerous complaints and negative events customers experienced at the chain store; and a 2011 tweet posted by a Chrysler Group employee that no one in Detroit knows how to drive. 100 When the Link REIT opened a Facebook page to recommend old-style restaurants, the page was flooded by furious comments criticizing the REIT for having forced a lot of restaurants and stores to shut down; it had to terminate its campaign early amid further deterioration of its corporate image.
In 2018, Max Factor, MAC and other beauty brands were forced to rush to disassociate themselves from Kuwaiti beauty blogger and Instagram influencer Sondos Alqattan after she criticised government moves to improve conditions for domestic workers. The code of ethics that is affiliated with traditional marketing can also be applied to social media. 103 However, with social media being so personal and international, there is another list of complications and challenges that come along with being ethical online.
A sensitive topic about social media professionals is the subject of ethics in social media marketing practices, specifically the proper uses of, often, very personal data. 104 With the invention of social media, the marketer no longer has to focus solely on the basic demographics and psychographics given from television and magazines, but now they can see what consumers like to hear from advertisers, how they engage online, and what their needs and wants are.
106 Most social network marketers use websites like Facebook and MySpace to try to drive traffic to another website. 105 The general concept of being ethical while marking on social network sites is to be honest with the intentions of the campaign, avoid false advertising, be aware of user privacy conditions which means not using consumers private information for gainrespect the dignity of persons in the shared online community, and claim responsibility for any mistakes or mishaps that are results of your marketing campaign.
107 While it is ethical to use social networking websites to spread a message to people who are genuinely interested, many people game the system with auto-friend adding programs and spam messages and bulletins. Social networking websites are becoming wise to these practices, however, and are effectively weeding out and banning offenders. In addition, social media platforms have become extremely aware of their users and collect information about their viewers to connect with them in various ways.
Social-networking website Facebook Inc. is quietly working on a new advertising system that would let marketers target users with ads based on the massive amounts of information people reveal on the site about themselves. 108 This may be an unethical or ethical feature to some individuals. Some people may react negatively because they believe it is an invasion of privacy.
On the other hand, some individuals may enjoy this feature because their social network recognizes their interests and sends them particular advertisements pertaining to those interests. Consumers like to network with people who share their interests and desires. 109 Individuals who agree to have their social media profile public, should be aware that advertisers have the ability to take information that interests them to be able to send them information and advertisements to boost their sales.
Managers invest in social media to foster relationships and interact with customers. 110 This is an ethical way for managers to send messages about their advertisements and products to their consumers. Since social media marketing first came into being, strategists and marketers have been getting smarter and more careful with the way they collect information and distributing advertisements.
With the presence of data collecting companies, there is no longer a need to target specific audiences. This can be seen as a large ethically gray area. For many users, this is a breach of privacy, but there are no laws that prevent these companies from using the information provided on their websites. Companies like Equifax, Inc.TransUnion Corp, and LexisNexis Group thrive on collecting and sharing personal information of social media users.
111 In 2012, Facebook purchased information from 70 million households from a third party company called Datalogix. Facebook later revealed that they purchased the information in order to create a more efficient advertising service. Facebook had an estimated 144. 27 million views in 2016, approximately 12. 9 million per month.
113 Despite this high volume of traffic, very little has been done to protect the millions of users who log on to Facebook and other social media platforms each month. President Barack Obama tried to work with the Federal Trade Commission FTC to attempt to regulate data mining. He proposed the Privacy Bill of Rights, which would protect the average user from having their private information downloaded and shared with third party companies.
The proposed laws would give the consumer more control over what information companies can collect. 111 President Obama was unable to pass most of these laws through congress, and it is unsure what President Trump will do with regards to social media marketing ethics. Web site reports. This involves tracking the volume of visits, leads, and customers to a website from the individual social channel. Google Analytics 114 is a free tool that shows the behavior and other information, such as demographics and device type used, of website visitors from social networks.
This and other commercial offers can aid marketers in choosing the most effective social networks and social media marketing activities. Return on investment data. The end goal of any marketing effort is to generate sales. Although social media is a useful marketing tool, it is often difficult to quantify to what extent it is contributing to profit.
ROI can be measured by comparing marketing analytic value to contact database or CRM and connect marketing efforts directly to sales activity. Customer response rates. Several customers are turning towards social media to express their appreciation or frustration with brands, product or services. Therefore, marketers can measure the frequency of which customers are discussing their brand and judge how effective their SMM strategies are.
In recent studies, 72 of people surveyed expressed that they expected a response to their complaints on Twitter within an hour. There has been an increase in social media marketing in sport, as sports teams and clubs recognise the importance of keeping a rapport with their fans and other audiences through social media. 116 Sports personalities such as Cristiano Ronaldo have 40. 7 million followers on Twitter and 49. 6 million on Instagram, creating opportunities for endorsements.

A South Carolina woman accused of killing her husband with eye drops in 2018 pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter Thursday and was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
Lana Sue Clayton was initially charged with murder and other counts in the poisoning of her husband, Stephen Delvalle Clayton, at their home in Clover in July of that year, NBC affiliate WCNC of Charlotte reported. Lana Clayton was arrested the next month and confessed to administering the substance without her husband s knowledge, the sheriff s office has said.
What a tangled web we weave, Judge Paul M. Burch said at Thursday s court hearing, according to video from WCNC. Clayton, you sure have tangled this one up. You let him suffer for three days, the judge said. The poisoning happened from July 19 to 21, the sheriff s office has said. Lana Clayton told the judge she did not intend to kill her husband and just wanted to make him sick, WCNC reported. After finding out the Visine was the cause of death, I attempted to take my life as well, she said in court.
I couldn t live with the thought that I did such a terrible thing. Stephen Clayton s sister in court called Lana Clayton a monster. Lana Clayton s lawyers said she was a good person having worked as a Veterans Affairs nurse in Charlotte, The Associated Press reported. The attorneys said Lana Clayton was abused as a child, raped on a military base and suffered post-traumatic stress disorder, according to the news agency. Lana Clayton previously shot her husband in the back of the head with a crossbow in 2016, and at the time, she told police it was an accident, WCNC reported.
Years later she changed her story and claimed the couple got into an argument and that her husband had thrown something at her and that she fired the crossbow as she ran away, according to the station. Stephen Delvalle Clayton died July 21, 2018, and an autopsy showed poisonous levels of tetrahydrozoline, a decongestant used to relieve redness in the eyes, in his body, the York County Sheriff s Office has said. Clover is a town of around 5,000 in the northern part of the state, near the North Carolina border southwest of Charlotte.

We all know that international data and text plans are handy, but they also add up; it doesn t matter where you are. Recently while searching in the app store I came across WhatsApp. This free text app is perfect for texting when you re cruising or in a foreign port.
When you install the app on your device, it asks you for your phone number and name, finds everyone in your address book that has WhatsApp, and then puts them on your favorite list. Reasons I love it. It works using data as well as wifi, so you aren t just limited to waiting until you get to a wifi connection. Data usage is minimal. see below It shows you when someone reads or is typing a message. You can create a profile.
It s pretty quick and lets you know when your messages have been delivered. iMessage Debate. I know that you can sometimes iMessage on ship s wifi, but the problem with that is the bandwidth it takes to send the text out. Also, if you re sending a photo, it could takes minutes to send because it sends the full file size, unlike WhatsApp, which reduces the file size.
You don t have to buy internet minutes on a cruise ship to use WhatsApp. WhatsApp is also handy at wifi hotspots anywhere in the world or if you have an international data plan. You can literally send hundreds of texts and still be under a megabyte. I went 10-days on this trip and never exceeded one megabyte of data for text-only messages. Pictures eat up a little more space, but not much. For more information on WhatsApp you can check out their website here.

The Economist explains What s driving American firms overseas. America needs tax reform if it wants to stem the flow of firms abroad. AMERICAN companies are on the move. On August 6th CF Industries, a fertiliser manufacturer, and Coca-Cola Enterprises, a drinks bottler, both said they would move their domiciles to Britain after concluding mergers with non-American firms. Five days later Terex, which makes cranes, announced a merger which will involve moving its legally recognised headquarters from Westport, Connecticut, in New York s tri-state area, to the tiny town of Hyvinkää, Finland.
What s driving these firms to pack up and go. For more than 30 years companies, especially American ones, have been merging with foreign firms or acquiring them outright in order to shift their tax bases abroad. It started in 1982, when McDermott, a construction company, outsmarted America s Internal Revenue Service the IRS by moving its base from New Orleans to Panama, where it had a subsidiary.
Ever since, this kind of move, called a corporate inversionhas been an attractive way for American companies with overseas earnings to reduce their tax bills. An inversion might not affect a company s day-to-day operations, but by changing the country of domicile officially, it can offer a way out. Because the American taxman has unusually long arms, companies based in the United States who earn profits abroad can end up iq option verificação piles of cash stuck overseas earnings that face hefty corporate taxation the instant they are brought to America for example to pay staff or to invest.
Since this means less revenue for Uncle Sam, the American government has been trying to desperately stop companies from fleeing and taking their revenue with them. But only rarely has the government been fleet-footed enough to catch them. Pulling off a successful inversion requires only a modest sleight of hand.
When company A based in America, say acquires company B based in Ireland the managers of the combined A B entity get to choose a domicile. If they choose the United States, they are in effect choosing to pay relatively high American corporate rates up to 39 on all the overseas profits they repatriate; unusually, the IRS taxes income on a global basis. 5 on profits generated in Ireland, but the crucial bit is that they will pay only the local rate on whatever profits are generated in foreign subsidiaries because Ireland, like most other countries, taxes on a strictly territorial basis.
That means paying, for example, 39 on profits generated within the United States, 20 in Britain, or 0 in Bermuda. A third option is to choose a neutral country, such as Britain or the Netherlands which, like most of the world, also have lower rates and a territorial system. If they choose Ireland instead, they will have to pay a much lower tax rate 12. Few global companies would choose to stay in America given that choice, though plenty remain based there, often for publicity reasons.
Walgreen s bosses abandoned plans to move to Europe last year, but only after calls for a consumer boycott. The IRS managed to tighten some rules in September, which seems to have made it slightly harder for other companies to invert. But simply making it harder to leave is surely not the answer. It has the effect of increasing the chances of hamstrung American firms being swept up by foreign rivals. This has already happened to American targets valued at 315 billion, all sold to foreigners this year, on the calculations of S P Capital IQ, a data provider.
So long as America s tax code is out of kilter with the rest of the world, its firms will find reason to sail for fairer shores, whether the IRS likes it or not. More from The Economist explains. September 12, 2018. Josh Bloch, Kathleen Goldhar, Anita Elash and Dave Pizer. The story of how NXIVM s Keith Raniere went from gifted child to self-help guru to accused sex-cult leader. NXIVM calls itself a humanitarian community. Experts and critics call it a cult. Uncover Escaping NXIVM is a new CBC investigative podcast series about the group and its leader, Keith Raniere, who claims to be one of the smartest men in the world and insists his followers address him as Vanguard.
Read about how Raniere spent decades refining his guru persona and powers of persuasion powers that prosecutors say he used to coerce and control women. Listen to the first four episodes and subscribe to the podcast at cbc. ca uncover or on iTunes. The story of how Keith Raniere became an international self-help guru and, later, an accused sex-cult leader is a cautionary tale about the power of storytelling itself. The same way a chef spends years practising his knife skills and perfecting his recipes, Raniere spent a lifetime developing his powers of persuasion and adding to his own legend.
At the height of his influence, as leader of a New York-based personal development training organization called NXIVM, Raniere had hundreds of followers who would hang on his every word and address him as Vanguard. Toni Natalie first heard of Raniere in 1991, when her husband, Rusty, informed her that one of the most intelligent men in the world was coming to Rochester, N.to pitch his discount purchasing club, Consumers Buyline.
Natalie had no desire to join another multi-level marketing scheme, but she says Rusty convinced her that Raniere was special and they should hear him out. You re gonna love this, she recalls Rusty telling her. He has a 240 IQ triple-major graduate from RPI Rensselaer Polytechnic Institutepianist, cyclist, East Coast judo champion. The making of Vanguard.
And he wants to save the world. The aspiring saviour Natalie saw on stage was 31, short, with a bowl haircut, little round glasses and rosy cheeks. Raniere bounced slightly as he walked around in his suit trying to recruit members for his fledgling business. Keith Raniere on stage pitching his Consumers Buyline group purchasing club. Toni Natalie. Natalie found Raniere to be humble, but also very engaging.
She approached him after the presentation. I said to him, God gifted you with all this brilliance, why aren t you curing cancer. Why aren t you doing something magnificent. She says Raniere replied, Oh, I will be. I m going to change the world. This is my platform. This is where I m going to begin. Don t you want to come along. Natalie absolutely did. Who says no to that. As it turns out, Raniere found new, more effective ways to convince people that he could change the world.
After Consumers Buyline collapsed in 1994, because various state and federal authorities suspected it was a pyramid scheme, Raniere ditched his business suits but kept his much-ballyhooed backstory, and re-branded himself as a self-help guru.Mexico and Canada, including a pair of wealthy heiresses and several TV actors. Smallville actor Allison Mack, seen in this photo from 2012, became a devoted follower of Raniere s.
Gus Ruelas Reuters. Prosecutors in New York, however, say Raniere s real story took a sinister turn. Members spread the legend of Keith Raniere that he s an enlightened being and humanitarian who developed a system that can unleash anybody s true potential and create a better, more ethical world in the process. He founded Executive Success Programs, which later became part of NXIVM, and began recruiting followers in the U. The FBI says the 58-year-old ran a cult-like group within NXIVM that used fraud and extortion to get him property, labour and sex from slaves who had his initials branded on their pelvises.
Today, he is in jail awaiting trial on charges that include sex trafficking, forced labour, wire fraud conspiracy and conspiracy to commit identity theft. Raniere has pleaded not guilty to the charges. A new seven-part CBC podcast called Uncover Escaping NXIVM takes an in-depth look at Raniere s life, including how he learned to use his story and those of others to create and control a secretive world. Fact and fiction.
Before his arrest, Raniere lived in the Knox Woods section of Clifton Park, N.surrounded by dozens of his most devoted followers as his neighbours. According to the FBI, he had a rotating group of 15 to 20 women with whom he maintained sexual relationships. He could often be spotted going for walks with his followers or holding court during late-night volleyball matches at a local community centre. Sarah Edmondson, 41, a former top recruiter for NXIVM in Vancouver and one of the women who blew the whistle on the branding group on the front page of the New York Times last October never joined Raniere s inner circle in Clifton Park, but she did spend time there when she travelled to NXIVM s headquarters in nearby Albany for training.
She had little interest in volleyball, and even less interest in staying up all night watching others play, but says she remembers feeling an odd sense of obligation to show up to the games. It was as if Raniere was testing his followers commitment. That was the pressure. If you didn t show up to volleyball, it d be like, Wow, I guess you re choosing comfort over spending time with the smartest man in the world, Edmondson says.
New students were taught on Day 1 to say thank you to his image hanging on the wall and refer to him as Vanguard. Venerating Raniere was an essential part of the NXIVM program, she says. Former NXIVM member and recruiter Sarah Edmondson says much of what she knew and believed about Raniere was based on the glowing praise others heaped on him. Harold Dupuis CBC. As with Consumers Buyline, the sales pitch relies heavily on tales of Raniere s brilliance and benevolence.
So much of what we believed about him was a result of what people said about him before I even met him, Edmondson says. That s where his validity comes from from other people going out and singing his praises. NXIVM operates similarly to a multi-level marketing business, meaning members are expected to constantly recruit new members to keep shelling out big bucks for training. Raniere s legend, so essential to his power, featured many claims from his childhood that are difficult to verify that he was speaking full sentences by age one, reading by age two and had mastered college-level math before high school.
East Coast judo champion, he rode a unicycle, he d spit jelly beans in whichever colour you d prefer. I mean, his dossier went on forever, Natalie jokes. A few things we do know Raniere was born in 1960, and grew up in Suffern, N.about two hours south of Albany. His father was in advertising and his mother was a dance teacher who died when Raniere was 17. We also know that he graduated from the prestigious Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.with degrees in math, biology and physics.
Barbara Bouchey, a longtime girlfriend who split with Raniere in 2008, says he told her his parents divorced when he was very young, and that he moved in with his mother, who was an alcoholic. Raniere and Barbara Bouchey broke up in 2008. Her exit from NXIVM in 2009 was followed by years of litigation. Barbara Bouchey. She says Raniere told her he became a night owl because as a teenager, he was often up late looking after his mother.
Raniere s father, James, didn t respond to CBC s request for an interview, but Bouchey says she had a good rapport with him. In fact, Bouchey says she called him when she and Raniere were breaking up and shared her concerns about his son s controlling behaviour and narcissism. One insight Bouchey shared with CBC is that Raniere s other iq option verificação would lecture her about how her diet and bad moods could negatively affect Raniere, because he s apparently so sensitive that he can pick up on other people s energy, even when they re not in his presence.
Bouchey says that during their lengthy conversation, James Raniere shared a remarkable story. When his son was seven or eight years old, he took an intelligence test that determined he was gifted. His father noticed a dramatic change in the boy s character when he learned the results, Bouchey says. He said it was almost like a switch went off. And suddenly, overnight, he turned into, like, Jesus Christ. And that he was superior and better than everybody, like a deity.
Adding to the legend. The first time Heidi Hutchinson saw Keith Raniere, it was around Christmas 1984 and his 24-year-old rear-end was trying to squeeze through the window of her teenage sister s bedroom. I walked into the room. He was stuck in the window, butt toward the door, Hutchinson says. She had no idea that her sister Gina, who killed herself in 2002, was romantically interested in anyone, let alone a man eight years older than her.
She was caught. Keith was caught. And then they had some explaining to do, Hutchinson says. Raniere excelled at explaining things. He managed to convince Gina s mother that he was interested in having a serious, committed relationship with her daughter. But Raniere had other girlfriends at the time, and Gina eventually found out, Hutchinson says. Gina was heartbroken. Hutchinson says Raniere had convinced his girlfriends that men are hardwired to be polyamorous but women are not, and that the only reason his romantic arrangement seems wrong to others is because people are brainwashed by society s flawed values.
She says one of Raniere s girlfriends later tried to persuade Gina to join their communal love-in with Raniere, but it didn t work. Gina stayed close with Raniere after their romantic relationship ended. So did Hutchinson, despite her anger at the way Raniere had broken her sister s heart. By this point, Raniere had a loyal crew of friends and admirers who seemed to think he was special in some way.
Since graduating from college, his resumé included little more than a brief stint at Amway, the multi-level marketing company that sells health and beauty products. He could be spellbinding, Hutchinson says. But by all accounts, people were drawn to him. He did listen very carefully, which I think was part of his charisma. In hindsight, she thinks there was something more cunning behind his attention that while he was listening so closely, he was actually calculating how to influence you through that conversation.
She suspects Raniere picked up on this. Hutchinson, who was raised with a very structured Mormon belief system, says she was making an effort to break loose and explore new ideas. Someone like Keith can step right up. and you know, Come this way. If he s a genius, it s in sales and manipulation. Raniere lived with his girlfriend Karen Unterreiner, and in the late 80s, their townhouse in Clifton Park became a sort of hippie hangout.
Three areas of interest in particular would have an obvious impact on Raniere s future projects. There always seemed to be a group of mostly women hanging around Raniere, and there were plenty of late-night discussions about philosophy, spirituality and, of course, making money. Hutchinson says he was fascinated by Scientology; by neuro-linguistic programming NLPa personal development discipline popular back then that focuses on using perception and communication techniques to change people s thoughts and behaviours; and by the multi-level marketing structure of Amway.
Read the other features in the Escaping NXIVM series. He saw potential in improving Amway s model, says Eric J. Roode, a close friend of Raniere s at the time. Raniere s admirers seemed to think he was on the verge of some great idea and somehow destined for greatness. And they wanted to be part of it. Hutchinson painted the scene this way Pretty much everyone s lounging around, and Keith, he s got a notebook, or he s got a Rubik s cube or something.
And there was planning and plotting and packaging of Keith as this guru going on. A key part of that packaging, she says, was Raniere s famous IQ test. But Hutchinson says she was surprised the test that supposedly proved his credentials as one of the smartest men in the world was a take-home exam. If he s a genius, it s in sales and manipulation, Hutchinson says. Power of secrets. Toni Natalie says there was something besides charisma in Raniere s ability to influence people. She remembers, for example, when she joined the team at Consumers Buyline in the early 1990s and Raniere discovered she was a smoker.
He asked if she wanted to quit, and she said yes. Toni Natalie lived with Raniere in the 1990s. They went to his office. Evan Aagaard CBC. All Natalie remembers is he asked her questions about what makes her uncomfortable or nervous, and then started applying pressure on certain parts of her knuckles. He told her to do the same thing whenever she felt like smoking. Natalie says she walked out of the office and her husband said, What the hell were you doing in there all that time.
Baffled, she asked what he meant. She had only been in the office for 15 minutes. He said, Toni, you were in there two and a half hours. The upside is that she never smoked again. But whatever went on in that two and a half-plus hours definitely was a point that completely changed my life, she says. Within a year of meeting Raniere in 1991, Natalie s marriage was over, and she d moved to Clifton Park to be with him.
She says Raniere convinced her that her husband was sleeping with the nanny. Natalie and Raniere opened a health products store in the mid-1990s, and that s where she says Raniere met Nancy Salzman, the woman who would help him develop the blueprint for NXIVM. Raniere with Nancy Salzman, the co-founder of NXIVM. Salzman was a nurse as well as an expert in neuro-linguistic programming and a skilled hypnotherapist.
Raniere, who had long been fascinated by NLP, was in awe of Salzman s talents and was determined to bring her into the fold, Natalie says. In true Raniere style, he and Salzman had a marathon meeting of the minds in the café behind the health store, Natalie says. Salzman went in skeptical, she says, but emerged four days later eager to be mentored by Raniere and to work with him on a self-help training business. Natalie says she became their guinea pig. She says her gruelling sessions with Raniere and Salzman, which included hypnosis, seemed to lay the groundwork for what would become the Executive Success Programs curriculum.
The sessions involved probing and rehashing Natalie s most painful secrets, she says, including the molestation she suffered as a child. When Raniere and Salzman held their first intensive training course, Natalie says she felt profoundly uncomfortable as she listened to students sharing their secrets. She says she knew how Raniere had used the secrets of her own life story to manipulate her and control her emotions. As Natalie listened to the students, she started having flashbacks of her own sessions moments during which she suspects she d been in a trance.
I started looking around and thinking, This isn t a self-help group. What are we doing. This is therapy. Listen to Episode 3 The story of NXIVM leader Keith Raniere. Character development.
